Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about SAT scoring, section scores, the PSAT, and how to interpret your results.
How is the SAT scored?
The SAT has two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math. Each section is scored on a 200–800 scale. Your total SAT score is the sum of both section scores, ranging from 400 to 1600.
What is a good SAT score?
The national average is around 1060. A score of 1200+ is generally competitive for most colleges, 1400+ is strong for selective schools, and 1500+ is excellent for highly selective programs.
How does the SAT Reading and Writing section score work?
The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score combines Reading and Writing sub-scores. On the current digital SAT, it is scored on a 200–800 scale based on performance across both modules.
What is the difference between the SAT and PSAT?
The PSAT is a practice version of the SAT scored on a 320–1520 scale, while the SAT goes up to 1600. The PSAT is used for National Merit Scholarship qualifying. This calculator includes a PSAT equivalent tab for reference.
Does the SAT penalize wrong answers?
No. The current SAT does not deduct points for wrong answers. Your score is based only on correct answers, so answering every question is always the right strategy.
How often can I take the SAT?
You can take the SAT as many times as you want, and many colleges use Score Choice, allowing you to submit only your best sitting. Most students take it two or three times.
What SAT score do I need for college admission?
Requirements vary by school. Research the 25th–75th percentile score range for each college you are applying to. That range gives you a realistic target for a competitive application.
